Solid Wood Door 2 Year Limited Warranty
Chronicle Custom Woodworks warrants, to the original purchaser of solid wood interior or exterior doors, that the product shall be free from defects in material and workmanship including milling, assembly, dimension, and grading. The warranty period shall commence on the date of delivery. Should the product fail to conform to this warranty within the warranty period, Chronicle Custom Woodworks will, at its option, (i) repair the product, (ii) replace the product in its original state of purchase, or (iii) refund the price originally paid to Chronicle Custom Woodworks for the product.
Please note that:
-
Colour variation in wood is a natural occurrence due to species, age, character, region of origin, UV exposure, etc. New and/or replacement products may not match samples or existing wood products. Colour variation in finish/stain due to wood variation is not considered a defect.
-
Due to colour variation of product and/or samples, Chronicle Custom Woodworks is not responsible for the consumer matching stain or finish to other wood products such as cabinets, floors, trim, etc.
-
Natural occurrences in wood characteristics such as variations in grain, colour, mineral streaks, knots, and minor checking are not considered defects. While every effort is made to reduce the appearance of surface checkings, it is considered a natural characteristic of the wood and is not covered by this warranty.
-
Normal exposure to sunlight will bring about changes in shading of any hardwood as it ages. Floor coverings, rugs, or furniture which blocks sunlight may give the appearance of discoloration. This is not a defect.
-
Damage due to water and/or excessive moisture including but not limited to damage resulting from broken pipes, wet mopping, industrial or abrasive cleaners, seasonal weather conditions or natural disasters is excluded from the warranty.
-
When the contract is for supply only, this warranty covers the cost of the replacement of products but will not cover the cost of removal, transport, finishing not done by Chronicle Custom Woodworks, or installation.
-
Chronicle Custom Woodworks may defer repairing or replacing products for up to 12 months from the date of claim in order to allow the door to acclimatize to local humidity and temperature. This deferral will not be counted against the warranty claim.
Hardwood will continue to expand and contract through heating and non-heating seasons. More important, your interior environmental controls which continually provide stable temperature and relative humidity has an impact greater than seasons. Chronicle Custom Woodworks does not warrant against the expansion and contraction of product or damage caused by low or excessive humidity. Please note it is the customers responsibility to ensure that adequate humidity levels are maintained in the home/location and that the wood is given adequate time to acclimate before installation or it will void the warranty. Failure to install the product promptly will void the warranty. While Chronicle Custom Woodworks recommends humidity levels be kept around 35%, stable and consistent humidity levels are more important than which humidity level is chosen. Humidity levels below 25% will likely result in hardwood failure and product will not be warranted in such an environment. Never install hardwood products while wet trades are present on site or when large humidity changes may occur.

Installer/Owner Responsibility
-
Hardwood is a natural product and may therefore contain features that may not be considered perfect by all people.
-
The installer/owner assumes all responsibility for final inspection as to grade and manufacture. This inspection must be done before installation or finishing. Carefully examine hardwood products for colour, finish, and quality before installing or applying finish. Chronicle Custom Woodworks assumes no responsibility for stain or finish quality for items shipped without stain. All products must be final sanded. If the product is in question do not install, cut, or otherwise modify the product.
-
Prior to installation, the installer/owner must determine that the job-site environment is adequate for the installation of the hardwood components. Recommendations of the construction and materials and local codes must be followed. Chronicle Custom Woodworks is not responsible for damage caused by excessively humid conditions or lack of job-site readiness.
-
Use of plugs, stain, filler, or putty for touch-up during installation should be accepted as normal procedure.
-
Chronicle Custom Woodworks assumes no responsibility for the condition, preservation, or protection of finished product that is installed or left on site at the customer request. Unless otherwise stated in the contract, it is the client’s responsibility to ensure that adequate protection is afforded to installed components during construction.
Solid Wood Door Care and Use Guide
Door Handling and Storage
-
Doors should be handled with clean gloves or hands to prevent leaving dirt and oil stains on the faces of the door.
-
Do not drag or slide doors along any surface that could damage the door. Do not drag or slide doors across each other. Do not leave objects or items sitting on the faces of the doors.
-
Doors must be stored in a dry, ventilated area in an enclosed building. Never store doors outside.
-
Doors should be stored flat on a level surface. When stacking doors, place a 2x4 at the top and bottom of each door, 12" from the edge. Place a third 2x4 in the middle for a center support. Cover doors to keep clean, but ensure proper air circulation exists. Do not store doors directly on concrete floors or near fresh concrete or drywall.
-
Never lean doors against a wall, as they will bow over time.
-
Never store doors in direct sunlight, as the wood will begin to oxidize and weather.
-
Do not remove the shrink wrap from the doors until you are ready to begin finishing them.
-
If doors are to be stored for longer than one week, all six sides of the doors must be sealed with a sealer or primer to prevent excessive moisture penetration or drying.
-
Foundations, concrete floors, and plaster or textured walls must be completely dry before the delivery or installation of doors to prevent the intake of excessive moisture.
-
Avoid placing or storing a door close to a heat source (minimum 4 feet away). Excessive heat directed on one part of the door may dry out that particular area, resulting in warping, twisting, shrinkage, and checking in that area.
Door Fitting and Hanging
-
Give doors sufficient time to acclimatize to the humidity of the surrounding area before hanging. In areas of extreme humidity, allow for a minimum of 72 hours.
-
Adjust or align components if necessary before finishing. Wood panels "float" and may be knocked into alignment with a wood block and hammer. Be careful not to damage the door.
-
When hanging a door, allow clearance for swelling of the door or frame in highly variable environmental conditions. Adequate clearance ranges 1/8" to 3/16” in width and height.
-
If trimming is needed, trim no more than 1" off bottom of the door and 1/8" at each side. Do not trim the top of the door.
-
Sill height should be a minimum of 4" above landing to prevent snow build up or rainwater from causing rot.
-
House humidity levels should be maintained at a reasonable level around 35% moisture. Extremes in humidity levels between the inside and outside of an exterior door may cause the door to warp and twist.
Adequate Overhang for Exterior Doors
-
An adequate overhang will help minimize damage caused by exposure to the elements. Adequate overhang length is a minimum extension of one-half the distance from the bottom of the door to the bottom of where the overhang begins, and at least one and a half times the width of the door.
-
If you are unable to achieve an adequate overhang, please consult your Chronicle Custom Woodworks representative. We offer limited warranties for doors without overhangs that meet specific requirements.
Door Stops or Blocks
-
The best way of ensuring long term durability of a door set is to ensure that the door leaf swings freely throughout the arc of the door opening, and that any hardware fitted is well maintained and regularly adjusted as required, allowing the door set to function as intended i.e. the closer allows the door leaf to close smoothly and the door latches without needing to be forced.
-
Doors being chocked open with blocks or wedges after they have been hung will induce stress on the hinges or cause the door to twist when working against a closer. Wedges or chocks should be removed to avoid the temptation to use them.
Door Finishing
-
Avoid use of dark stains or dark paint in areas exposed to direct sunlight.
-
Prior to finishing, sand all surfaces of the door using the appropriate grit sandpaper. Sand the door following the direction of the grain. Ensure that all marks, fingerprints, and scratches are removed.
-
Carefully seal all edges including the top and bottom of the door and areas routed for hardware with a minimum of three finish coats of a high-quality paint or varnish. Chronicle Custom Woodworks recommended finish for all wood doors is Odie's Oil.
-
On doors that are glazed with glass that are painted, the finish used should be flowed from the wood slightly onto the glass. This will provide assurance against water leakage and protect the glazing compound from drying out. Lap paint 1/16" to protect against moisture penetration. NOTE: It is the finisher's responsibility to protect glass prior to and during finishing.
-
The tops of all outswing doors must be flashed for weather.
-
Exterior sealers must contain UV inhibitors to protect the door from sunlight. Odie's Oil contains natural UV inhibitors, and the pigments used to make stain colours are fully oxidized and won’t shift colour.
-
Chronicle Custom Woodworks is not responsible for unsatisfactory results of applied finishes not applied by Chronicle Custom Woodworks itself. Carefully follow instructions from the manufacturer of the finish.
Exterior Finish Maintenance
-
Exterior sealers will weaken over time due to exposure and may require annual maintenance. Inspect the door at least once per year and refinish as necessary. Odie's Oil is not a film finish and will not weaken, peel or flake.
-
Keep the exterior of the door dry, and do not let water pool or stand on any part of the door. Regularly wipe the exterior of the door with warm water and a clean cloth, using a mild soap such as household dish soap. Chronicle Custom Woodworks recommends Odie's Super Cleaning Concentrate. Dust or organic buildup on the door will collect moisture and speed the breakdown of the finish and rot the door. Periodic cleaning of the door is an important part of ensuring a long-lasting door.
-
Do not let water or moisture stand on the interior of the door. In cooler weather, condensation may form on the inside of the door. This condensation needs to be wiped off and is not indicative of a defect with the door. Air flow over the door will help reduce moisture build up. Do not blow hot air on the door.
-
Relative humidity values in the house should be maintained around 35% to prevent condensation buildup, especially during dry, cold weather.
-
Signs that your door requires finish restoration include dryness, raised grain, minor surface checks, dark streaks, or a whitish cast.
-
Please contact the finish manufacturer if you have any questions/concerns about finish maintenance that is not supplied by Chronicle Custom Woodworks.
Glass Inspection
For doors containing glass, glass defects must be claimed within 10 (ten) days of receiving the product. Chronicle Custom Woodworks is unable to warrant glass beyond that which glass manufacturer will likewise warrant the product or beyond the manufacturer warranty period. The standard for determining that a scratch, smudge, or other blemish warrants replacement is as follows:
-
It can be seen from ten (10) feet distance;
-
It occurs within an oval-shaped area comprising 80% of the viewing area of the glass;
-
It is visible against normal daylight (not direct sunlight) when viewed perpendicular to the glass
